HW 4: Option 1: Want to be an overnight Celebrity? Get a blog!

Filed under: Uncategorized — mbullett at 12:45 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2008

After reading Kline & Burnstein’s, “The Voice of the Customer” I found something very interesting. They talked about how blogging can basically make or break a company or a person.  One very interesting person that this happened to that sparked my attention was “Danger Mouse”. This man was a hip-hop rapper and probably wouldn’t have made it very far without being in the blogosphere. He became a huge hit almost overnight before of bloggers, I found this amazing that blogs can do something as extreme as that.  He was mentioned on page 107.  I looked him up on Wikipedia and found out a lot about him.  I found out that his real name is actually, Brian Burton.  He was born in White Plains, New York and has always been interested in music. After he became a hit in the blog world, he made an album called the “Grey Album” that took the Beatles’ “White Album” and remixed it with Jay-Z’s “Black Album” and it became a huge hit. He has traveled all over the world touring with groups such as: the Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley, the Black Keys and many more. I decided to talk about him because I thought that his “overnight celebrity” fame because of blogs was so interesting and amazing. I think that blogs are a great thing and clearly have a huge amount of power if they can help make or break a performing artist. Just by reading about “Danger Mouse” it makes me realize just how much blogs can do to help people all over the world!  This is definitely a great blog success story!

HW 3: “Participatory Democracy” The future of politics

Filed under: Uncategorized — mbullett at 12:05 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2008

I’ve always believed that politics in the United States would have a bigger impact face to face instead of the internet.  After reading Kline and Burnsteins, “Toward a more participatory democracy” I have clearly changed my feelings. In the reading they claim that politics are more intense on the internet and blogs. That now both sides of the political race can put their input in on the blogs they have more power to get out to the people. “It’s bigger than anything that has occurred since you wormed into power in the 1960s.  Now, when a leftist writes a piece for publication, it will be dragged into the light by honest people” (Hurtubise, 3). They showed that over the years, political blogs have turned into a very critical source of news and opinions.  I definitely agree with this reading, I think that political blogs are a great way for millions of Americans to get their point of view out and known to the rest of the world. I think that newspapers and other forms of the media are nice ways to get information as well, but they just don’t have the same huge impact that online political blogs have.  If political blogs have come this far already I can’t even fathom how big they will become in the next couple years, or even months!  This reading helped me open my eyes to become a more political person. I’ve always been interested in politics but have never had enough information to help understand exactly what it’s all about. Political blogs I believe have that kind of information and can not only help you understand better, but get your opinion out.  Lastly political blogs can clearly help the people campaigning, “A lot of people are even afraid to open their door to strangers. But they’re not afraid to talk to people online.”  (Kline, 17)  Political blogs are here to stay, and will only get better in the future!

HW 2: Politics in blogging? Of Course!

Filed under: Uncategorized — mbullett at 11:20 am on Wednesday, January 30, 2008

After reading Dan Burnstein’s 12 key ideas in “From Cave Painting to Wonkette” some certain ideas sparked up to my attention and made me want to read more.  Politics have always been something that interests me.  I’ve never completely understood everything about them, but I think that’s why I find them so interesting.  Key idea number 11 was all about politics and how blogs in the future can possibly have an effect on politics and political elections, just like the media does right now.  Personally I completely agree with this and think that by just blogging your ideas and feelings about politics, you could definitely change people’s minds and persuade them into what you believe in. I think that blogs are just like the media at times, and if you read a blog that was continuously about politics and different views it could not only change your view on how you feel about a certain side of politics, but it could also help you understand politics better and what they are all about. I would definitely find blogs about politics interesting because I am now 18 and can vote in the upcoming election, I feel like this would be a good way to help me better understand the election and what the candidates have to offer. I completely agree with Dan Burnstein’s #11 key idea about politics in blogs.
