The Alturas Duo brings together a blend of history, geography, and nature. This musical pair has used their surroundings to reflect global rhythms in their creation of innovative and unconventional music. Their combination of viola, guitar, and charango in both classical and Latin American music transcends borders.

For the past 100 years, Franco-Americans have lived, worked, and contributed to the civic and commercial welfare of Cheshire County and to the diverse richness of our Keene State College student body. A quiet and frequently invisible presence among us, Franco-Americans established, nurtured, and maintained global ties long before “global” became a buzzword. Handouts provided.

Peter McLaren, professor at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education, is an architect of the Critical Pedagogy and Critical Literacy movements. As he states on his faculty page on the UCLA website, “The critical pedagogy [that] I support and practice advocates non-violent dissent, the development of a philosophy of praxis guided by a Marxist humanism, the study of revolutionary social movements and thought, and the struggle for socialist democracy.” His scholarly works have been translated into 20 languages.

12 p.m. Friday, November 6; Mountain View Room, Student Center
How can educators help students address the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly globalized world? To paraphrase Tip O’Neill, all global studies is local. Too often, global/international studies is framed as a strategic interrogation of otherness, an economic or political reconnaissance mission for competitive advantage. But the real challenge of globalization is nothing less than a holistic re-imagining of one’s identity and place in the world. This roundtable examines ways to integrate disciplinary perspectives in an international studies program to help students understand and appreciate their unique role in an increasingly integrated world.

Although globalization can expose us to aspects of cultures that were previously understood to be “distant” or “foreign,” the process can also overwhelm parts of indigenous cultures and push them into extinction. Drawing upon their work collecting, recording, and preserving folk music from southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, panelists offer insights into their interactions between local traditions and larger cultural movements.

10 a.m. Friday, November 6; Mountain View Room, Student Center
At Keene High, we have two active exchanges: one with the Lycee Lumiere in France, and one with the Colegio Agave in Spain. We take local learning of a second language and put it to global use. The exchange programs facilitate international relationships and friendships, which help make our students global citizens. The exchange programs add vitality to our academic content and school community as students see a real-world use for their language learning through hosting foreign students and traveling to other countries. Three teachers from the World Language Department at Keene High School will discuss the school’s innovative program, and they will present guidelines to help high school language teachers develop successful international exchange programs.

What are the roles and responsibilities for those who hope to embody the ideal of global citizenship? Professors Mullen and Cuper co-taught a 17-day field course to the Sacred Valley in the high Andes of Peru, where 10 students in KSC’s Honors Program engaged in group service learning and individual research related to their personal interests and major fields of study. This media presentation looks at these students’ international travel experience.
