Rolling Admissions

Many questions get asked this time of year, so to ease your mind I will dedicate the next few posts to some of the most common questions we get asked.

Many students and families call wanting to know if Keene State has early action or early decision. We have neither. We are rolling decision. Rolling decision means that as soon as an application is received, processed and we have everything we need to make a decision, we will go ahead and do so. We, the admissions committee, will start reviewing applications after December 1 and continue until our class is filled. What do we need to make an application complete you ask? We need an official copy of your high school transcript including your Senior year 1st marking period grades, SAT or ACT scores received directly from the source, essay and recommendation.

E-mail me a question you have and I will dedicate a post to it; swatt@keene.edu

Hope your senior year is going well and i look forward to reading your application very soon.

On the road again…

Right now I am typing this entry from a hotel room in Southeastern Conneticut before I head out to an evening  high school college fair. Ah yes,it is that time of year agin, the time when admission professionals from around the country travel to national, regional and high school college fairs talking about their respective institution answering questions you or your parents may have. We call it fall travel season. Some counselors compare our road travels to that of a traveling salesperson or revivial preacher. I personally like to refer it as my Keene State Tour ‘08. Ok, I know it soounds a little cheesey but I like it. So check your high school, your local high school, the national and regional college fair schedule; a representative from Keene State College may be coming to a school or fair near you! See you on the road.

School is in session and tours start soon

Classes started on Monday,  August 25. The campus has been in full swing since. There has been a lot of activity down Appian Way (our Main Street of campus) as students have been enjoying the summer like weather. This weekend is Welcome Back Weekend. Tonight, Friday, there will be a bingo game on campus for all students. Tomorrow there will be trampoline performers, a BBQ, and a local radio station giving away prizes and broadcasting live from campus. It sounds like a fun filled weekend!

Our tours start on Monday and will run through the frist week of December. Please check our website for tour time and dates. We will be hitting the road soon and may be coming to your area. Feel free to e-mail us to see if a Keene State College Owl Admissions Rep will be visiting your school. We look forward to meeting you on the road and can’t wait to see you on campus!

Move in weekend

Keene State College... in cookie formThis past weekend faculty, staff and current students helped welcome the class of 2012 to the Keene State College community. Under bright blue skies, 1300 first year students moved into various resident halls on campus. This event not only welcomes families to the KSC community, but it ushers in the new academic year. I love seeing the first year students moving into their rooms, picking up their books and computers and starting to settle into the life of a college student. I’ve attached some photos of campus that I took over the weekend.. enjoy!

SAT update

Starting this fall, any student applying to Keene State must have their SAT scores submitted to us by College Board. We will no longer accept SAT scores from the high school transcript.

Rain, Rain go away

I’m sitting here in my office listening to the roaring thunder and the pitter patter of the rain hitting my window. I hope the sun shines soon.

Sorry it’s been so long since I posted. The campus has been a buzz with all things orientation lately. We, the admissions office, have been busy stuffing name tags, checking students and parents in and making sure that families know where to go once they are on campus. Yes, orientation takes place in June and it is where you get your classes for the fall and picture taken for your id. Of course there are other activities that take place during the 2 day event, but ID’s and classes seem to be the ones asked about most often.

If you are familiar with this blog and know where the links are (up on the right), then you will notice that I have added a new blog by one of our current students. Larisa will be blogging this fall about her adventures in Rome! You can click on her link to find out more about her summer and preparation to study in Italy. As always, let us know what you think.

I hope you are all having an amazing summer so far! Congratulations to the class of 2008!!!

Just for Juniors

Many juniors want to visit campus this time of year. We receive many phone calls with requests to visit. If you are new to this blog I encourage you to go back and read; I have listed some very helpful information to our seniors during the year. If you want to visit campus please check our website for tour times and dates. We can not add anyone to the program once a tour is full!! Summer tours are available. Believe it or not, summer is a great time to visit campus!

Remember that as a senior you will have plenty of opportunity to visit in the fall. We also travel all over New England and visit many high schools and attend college fairs throughout the region. Feel free to e-mail me over the summer to see if we will be attending your high school or a college fair near you.

As you plan your courses for senior year keep in mind that just meeting the minimum requirements will not gain you access into Keene State College. You must challenge yourself up through senior year. The average GPA last year was a 3.0/4.0 scale and the average SAT was 1020 (Critical Reading and Math ONLY).

Admitted Student Days

Yesterday kicked off our first (of many) Owl Admitted Student Days. Under cloudy skies, and some rain drops, 90 families visited campus to have one last look around before deciding if Keene State is where they would like to be next fall. The day was full of fun, great presentations and lots of walking and eating (yes the Dining Commons is all you can eat!). If you have been accpeted to Keene for fall 2008 and are still undecided about attending, then the ASD is just for you. You can sign up online here.

Icy conditions

 Happy Valentine’s Day!

Yesterday the college was closed due to the extreme weather conditions that were beating down on the Mondadnock region. Closing the college rarely happens so don’t get too excited about it if you are planning on coming to Keene next year. I think it only happened twice when I was student here.  This morning the sidewalks were treacherous. In fact I fell once on campus  already (I’m sure there were more mishaps than mine). For those of you coming here next year please be sure to bring sturdy winter boots with good treads. It will definitely help as you navigate campus and get you to class on time.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the holiday season. I can’t believe we are back. The students are still gone and there is a ton of snow on the ground here in Keene. We are very busy here in admissions. There are lots of applications coming through the mail and we are reading them as soon as they are complete. Some of you may have already heard from us regarding our decision. Congratulations to those who have already been accepted. We hope to see you on campus in the fall. For those who are still waiting, please be paitient. We will get to your application as soon as we can. Please remember that the college was closed from December 21 until today, January 2. We are getting back into the swing of things and are very busy getting applications ready for our review. Always remember you can check the status of your application using your WebAdvisor account.

Enjoy the week and stay warm!
