Essay Questions

I’m receiving a lot of e-mails regarding the essay questions. You all want to know what the essay questions are so I will post both of them here. Remember, it is extremely important that you answer one of them. Make sure you are using the 2009-2010 application, if you are a high school senior, because the essay question may change from year to year.

REQUIRED ESSAY

1) At Keene State, we recognize that successful college students exhibit the characteristics of a good leader. Please write an essay (250-300 words) describing how you provided leadership in a single activity of organization over a period of time.

OR

2) Please write an essay (250-300 words) describing a personal experience facing or witnessing discrimination, and reflecting on its impact on your life.

Here some other helpful tips when writing your college essay:

* Make sure it is well written

*Sometimes longer is not always better; remember: quality vs. quantity, (do make sure it falls within our guidelines of a word count)

*Be yourself, remember; we are humans too, we know when a student is trying too hard. The best essays I’ve read are the ones where the student is genuine, sincere and honest

Good luck! I look forward to reading your essays.

Open House 2008

Yesterday was the KSC Owl Admissions Open House. It was beautiful day to host an incredible event. Over 400 families visited Keene State College to speak with professors, attend academic overview sessions, speak with representatives from admissions and student service offices and tour our campus. I have posted some photos from the exciting day. Thanks to Liz Nute for taking these fabulous photos!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins and Open House?

Last weekend, October 25, the city of Keene hosted the 18th annual Pumpkin Festival in downtown Keene. If you have never heard or been to the pumpkin festival I encourage you the check out the website to see pictures and information regarding this fabulous fall event. The day before Pumpkin Fest, our quad on campus turns into a pumpkin patch. Aptly called Pumpkin Lobotomy, students sit and carve pumpkins to take downtown for visitors from all over New England to see. Students love to participate in Pumpkin Fest and it’s one, of many, events on campus that students look forward too.

This weekend is Open House. We do one open house a year and this is the weekend to do it. If you have not signed up for Open House it is still not too late. You can sign up here. You must be registered to attend. If you do not want to attend Open House don’t worry, there are still numerous opportunities to visit campus.

As the cold weather settles in and we slowly come back to the office, after being on the road for weeks, we will soon start reading applications. Be sure to check the mail for information on how to access your application information online. This information will arrive to you shortly after your application is received and processed. Your WebAdvisor letter will contain a user-name and password, DO NOT lose this information!

Happy Fall!

Interviews, Essays and Recommendations

Interviews: At Keene State College we do not offer interviews. We received over 5,000 applications last year and to meet everyone of the students who applied to KSC, well that would just be impossible.

Essay: I know writing the college essay can be stressful and a bit intimidating. I’m here to tell you to RELAX. We want you to write a well written essay. We make it easy for you by providing 2 essay questions to choose from. Remember to be yourself and if the word count goes over 300, it’s ok.

Recommendations: We only require 1 recommendation when applying to KSC. We hope that your recommendation comes from either a Guidance Counselor or teacher. Many students ask me if they can include more than one recommendation when applying. My answer is always YES.

I hope these tips ease the application process a bit. I know applying to college can be overwhelming. Remember, we are here to help you. We want to the process to be exciting, not grueling.

Good Luck!

Spring Touring

I just spent the last week in Vermont traveling to various college fair around the state. I met some great students while there. If I had a chance to speak to you, please be sure to visit us this summer or fall. Speaking of visiting, I seem to be getting a lot of requests regarding tour dates and times. All of our tours for the remainder of the semester can be found here. If a tour is full please remember that we can not add anymore students to the program. We will also be posting our summer tour schedule within the next month. Summer is a great time to visit campus! If you can’t visit but want to ask questions, feel free to contact me! I can be reached at swatt@keene.edu or online at AIM screen name; KSCSasha.

April Fool’s Day

Wow! So much has been going on and it has been a while since I posted a new entry. I apologize for being away for so long.

Things in the office have been so busy. Our Admitted Student Day programs have been successful and fun. I love meeting the students who will be here next fall.

Spring travel is in full swing. Be sure to visit us at one of the many college fairs we will be traveling to in the next few weeks. We will be attending most New England National College fairs and the NEACAC fairs. Be sure to also check with your high school, we may be visiting a fair near you!

Since today is April 1st I should remind everyone that we are no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2008 semester. This is no joke! If you are still interested in applying to Keene State College please consider us for the Spring 2009 semester.

I should also mention that there are some very exciting things happening around campus as of late. The past weekend was the Academic Excellence Conference here on campus. This conference allows students, who are producing excellent work in their major of study, to share their work with a broad audience. You can view the conference schedule here,

This is a wonderful opportunity for students!

I hope you are all having a successful academic year!
