My semester long project, I have decided, will be about how online reputation economies and recommender systems affect multiculturalism and the U.S. economy. Online recommender economies and similar recommender systems largely affect the nation’s economy and our multiculturalism. What people say about a certain brand or product can largely influence how popular it’s going to be and what group of people it will be popular among. The public trusts what their peers are saying and, as David Kline says, recommending via ‘word of mouth’ has a stronger impact than people may think. “Executed well, Word of Mouth marketing campaigns can measurably improve product trials, generate sales, and engender customer loyalty” (Paul D’Alessandro and Jamil Husain of Diamond). In fact, word of mouth is how most books (Harry Potter), Computer Brands (Dell vs. Gateway) & Great Movies (public vs. professional critic’s opinion), along with several other things become popular and get their names built up. This “word of mouth” marketing campaign that is rapidly sweeping our nation greatly influences consumer’s opinions, therefore largely skewing the diversity of our economy and ultimately, leaving a great impact on what defines our country as a whole.
