Gender and Sexuality: Homosexuality Portrayal in the Media

Features, Gender

By Lauren Rosenzweig

Over the last forty years, the Sex Revolution evolved rapidly and left a small space for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community to rise up and begin a separate revolution. As the sex era redefined the boundaries for fluent use of sexual references within the media, homosexuality gradually gained more attention. After the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village, New York, the LGBT community refused to conceal personal sexual identities and began a civil rights movement for homosexuals across the country. After the courageous fight in Greenwich Village, homosexuality progressively assimilated into mainstream media, thus so far many positive results have come about. However, negative attitudes portrayed in the media continue to influence society’s view of homosexuality tremendously.
