Normal School Bill Passes

As reported the following day, the senate passed the bill calling for a normal school in Keene by a 17 to 6 vote. Also passed, as an amendment to another bill, was the bill for the “Trunk Line Highway,” often referred to as the “West Side Boulevard,” which would most likely pass through Keene.

Tax Commission Bill Passes

On March 24, 1909, Representative Joseph Madden, of Keene, made a motion to reconsider the normal school bill calling for two new normal schools, as he had learned that Gov. Quimby would not sign legislation providing for more than one additional school.

At the March 13 session of the legislature, a joint board was created, consisting of the governor and council and board of trustees of the state normal school, with authority to establish a new normal school in the location they would determine.

Normal School Question

On February 26, the Cheshire County delegation met in Concord and formed a committee to approach the delegations of other counties to convince them that Keene was an ideal place for a new normal school.

The January 23 issue reported that the total number of bills introduced to that point was 498 and included one from Representative Joseph Madden, proposing to establish a normal school at Keene. This was referred to the normal school committee, joining the Rockingham County proposal.
