IHFILM 261 Intro to Film History
Film Studies Program Proposal
RATIONALE:
Portfolio process allows increased selectivity in evaluating incoming students on the basis of produced materials, similar to those currently established by Art.
Replacing FILM 352 Film Genres and Directors with FILM 353 Cinema and Diversity in core courses in major requirements will train students to consider social and political implications of film texts and discourses within a society in producing their own works.
Changing the title of FILM 352 Film Genres and Directors to “Topics in Film Studies” recognizes more diverse and far-reaching topics dealt with by the course such as national cinemas and non-fiction/experimental cinema.
FILM 355 FILM THEORY
RATIONALE:
Since FILM 352 is to be replaced with FILM 353 in the major requirements, prerequisites for upper level courses need to be changed accordingly.
FILM 352 Topics in Film Studies
RATIONALE:
Existing title “Film Genres and Directors” does not adequately represent the variety of topics different FILM 352 sections cover in each semester.
Existing course description is not inclusive of non-narrative film texts some of the sections of FILM 352 centrally or partially deal with.
FILM 270 Introduction to Film Analysis
RATIONALE:
In the current semester, there are five sections of “Introduction to Film Analysis,” all offered as IS Perspective course (IHFILM 270). The Film faculty recognizes a strong need to offer at least two sections of this course per semester for majors only since majors and non-majors take this course for different reasons with different levels of knowledge, interests and investment.

FILM 353 Cinema and Diversity
RATIONALE:
Responding to the negative impact of films made without an awareness of the social and political functions of cinema, Film faculty came to an agreement that it is crucial to educate our Film majors to gain a clear understanding of the relationship between cinema and the historical world around it. Since this course will further strengthen our major and enrich our curriculum, the Film faculty proposes that this course be included in the catalog as part of core requirement for all film majors.
