BIO 498 INDEPENDENT STUDY

RATIONALE:
Students are encouraged to do research and will not be limited in their pursuit of accomplishing a project, or projects by credit limitations. Removing the maximum allowable independent study credits will allow students to do as much research as they like, and get credit for it. This does not impact their other program requirements and additional credits earned would be above and beyond degree requirements.

Biology BA Program Proposal

RATIONALE:
We propose to change the requirements of the BA program in Biology to include BIO 495 Senior Seminar (4 credits) as a core course. BIO 495 currently isn’t required of students in the BA program. We also propose to reduce our other upper-level course requirements to compensate for the addition of this 4 credit course.
BIO 495 is a new 4 credit capstone course currently only required of students in our B.S. program. The catalog description for BIO 495 reads:
Within the context of an overarching biological theme, students integrate and advance their experience and knowledge. Students will recognize their important roles as scientists in their communities and further enhance their research, critical thinking, and oral and written communication skills. This course prepares students for professional careers or postgraduate opportunities. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Fall.

INBIO 300 ADVANCED TOPICS IN BIOLOGY

This course will provide students with an upper-level perspectives course for the Integrative Studies program. Learning outcomes for the course are consistent with Perspectives courses in the IS program and emphasize a more in depth analytical approach then INBIO 101 or INBIO 104 by including critical dialogue, the impact of biology on an understanding of self, society and environment, and the exploration of ethical concerns.

INBIO 104 Lab Biology Topics

We are shifting our previously existing topics course to be suitable for the Integrative Studies program. INBIO 104 will replace the previously existing BIO 104. Learning outcomes are consistent with expectations for Perspectives courses in the IS program.

INBIO 101 Topics in Biology

An exploration of biological issues and methods for non majors. Applying basic principles to modern problems, the course may focus on a theme such as evolution and conservation of biodiversity, plants and society, or ecology and environmental issues. Can be repeated for elective credit but not ISP credit as topics change.

BIOLOGY, B.A. and B.S.

Since the title of BIO 373 changed, we are correcting the information in the program description.

BIO 373 Neuroethology

The title and description change prevents excessive content overlap with BIO 212, Cells and Physiology. The change also allows for an upper-level neuroscience course that is integrated across behavioral, physiological, and ecological fields, therefore more closely aligning with our department’s new integrative lab/lecture format.

BIO 106 The Evolution of Life

This course can be taught as an INBIO topics course. There is no need for a separate course number and description for the class. It can now be part of the IS program. This course was proposed while the bio dept. was undergoing its 4 credit and ISP changes. While the course description implies that the course was for education majors, it could have been taken by any student. In reality, it has never been offered. Any INBIO topics course may be taken by education students or any other non-bio majors. There is no reason for a specific advisory opinion from Education.

BIO 101 and 104 Course Deletions

We are shifting our previously existing topics course to be suitable for the
Integrative Studies program. These courses are being replaced by INBIO
101 and INBIO 104.
