IH AMST 291 Special Topics will allow American Studies to offer a Humanities topics course in the Integrative Studies Program.

RATIONALE:

1.Added sentence under “Language Requirement”: To make our description

consistent with other descriptions in the catalog.

2.Title change of ENG 345: course title was changed last year

3. Added words “when appropriate” to ENG 370: Not always offered as a Differing

Cultural Perspectives course

4. Addition to “Select two courses”: IH ENG 240 should have been added last year;

same with IIENG 245.

5. Added Differing Cultural Perspectives definition for clarity.

II AMST 250 INTERPRETING AMERICAN CULTURES

AMST 250: Interpreting American Cultures is course ideally suited to the interdisciplinary IS course requirement. We are therefore offering AMST 250 as an IS course. We have changed the description to encompass the ways this topics course is taught by core faculty.

American Studies Major

This addition, IIAMST 250 Interpreting American Cultures, will now become part of the
core requirements of the American Studies Major, strengthening the core of the major.
Core credits will now be 20 instead of 16. Credits in “Area courses” changes from 24 to
20 because students will select one course under American literature instead of two.
There is no change in the overall number of credits in the major.

AMST 250 Interpreting American Culture

This course will be replaced by II AMST 250 Interpreting American Cultures in
response to the call for courses for the ISP.

IH AMST 248 CULTURES OF NORTHERN PLAINS INDIANS

An introduction to American Indian studies through the perspectives of Northern Plains
Indians, focusing on Plains Indians’ literature, music, art, Indian law, history, and
philosophy. Prerequisite: ITW 101. Annually
