Exercises Opening Keene Normal School

The opening exercises on Tuesday, September 28, 1909, featured a scripture reading by Principal Jeremiah M. Rhodes, an invocation by Rev. E. A. Renouf, addresses by Martin V. B. Clark, Mayor of Keene, Col. Bertram Ellis, president of the Board of Education, Principal Dr. James E. Klock of the Plymouth normal school, and Superintendent of Public Instruction Henry C. Morrison.

Opening Day Program

On September 27, the Keene Evening sentinel published the program of activities for the opening of the Keene Normal School, and described the work that had been done on the Hale building.

On September 10, the Keene Evening Sentinel announced the opening of the Keene Normal School will be on September 28 and provided background on the new principal, the faculty of the normal school, and the teachers in the Elliot school.

Vote to Buy Lot

Two weeks later, on July 22, the vote was taken and the purchase of the Pearson property from funds from the city treasury was approved by a three to two vote of the board of aldermen.

On Thursday, July 8, 1909, the common council unanimously approved a proposal to borrow $7,000 for the purchase of the Pearson property, but the board of aldermen voted three to two in favor, defeating the proposal which required a two-thirds vote. The Contract Between Normal School Trustees and Union School District of Keene

The contract between the normal school trustees and the Union School district of Keene was signed on July 7, 1909.

Vote of Three to One

At the mass meeting of the voters of the city of Keene, there were several speeches, for and against the proposal to purchase the Pearson property to add to the normal school site, after which 257 voted in favor of, and 85 voted against, purchasing the property.
