Lecture at the Normal School
The first of a series of lectures to the normal school pupils by members of the faculty was given this morning , at 10 o’clock in Normal hall, by Principal Jeremiah M. Rhodes. A public invitation had been extended to all who would like to do so to attend and a number of ladies and gentlemen were present and greatly enjoyed the lecture, which was considered a particularly fine one, both from a literary and a metaphysical standpoint.
The subject of the lecture was “The Silent Influences of the School Room,” and the thought was that the systematic employment of gems of literature placed from day to day conspicuously before the eye of the pupil, like a beautiful picture or other work of art, serves to impress upon the mind the quotations themselves or the ennobling ideas and sentiments they contain, and often to stimulate research and inquiry of great benefit. The quotation, in each case should be accompanied by a reference stating where it may be found, and the teacher should be ready to answer enquiries.
Mr. Rhodes’s lecture consisted largely of quotations illustrating his ideas, the narrative, as he remarked, being the thread upon which he sought to string the pearls. The subject is one which he has studied for a number of years and has been able to apply in his work as a teacher with tangible results.
