On Thursday, July 8, 1909, the common council unanimously approved a proposal to borrow $7,000 for the purchase of the Pearson property, but the board of aldermen voted three to two in favor, defeating the proposal which required a two-thirds vote. At the mass meeting of the voters of the city of Keene, there were several speeches, for and against the proposal to purchase the Pearson property to add to the normal school site, after which 257 voted in favor of, and 85 voted against, purchasing the property.
