1914

So we’ve been thinking about Fiske ever since Monday, and about a certain story we read about its opening in Striving, the history of the college that was written for its 75th anniversary.

Apparently, when the first dorm was finally “ready,” it wasn’t, quite. The stain on the doors and in the closets wasn’t dry when school started in 1914. One alum remembered the matron going around, getting an account from each student of clothes that had been ruined as a result, so the college could reimburse.

1956-57

As we’ve been working on this blog, one outstanding source of photos has been old Kronicles.

Do you know these folks from the 1957 edition? Perhaps more important, do you know what they’re drinking?

See Jayne talk about Fiske

On a recent tour of shiny-new Fiske, we caught wind that Jayne Washer (’70), who’s now a program support assistant with the Aspire program at KSC, lived in Fiske in 1966-67. We asked her to tell us a little more about her experiences in the first dorm on campus, back when it was only about 50 years old.

On the social aspects of life in Fiske:

On her old room:

On the availability of on-campus housing:

On life with curfews:

On dodging those curfews:

On Christmastime at Fiske (awww):

Got Fiske stories of your own to tell? Leave them in the comments.

Send Us Your…

Consider this the first installment of a regular feature we’re calling “Send Us Your.” This month, as we look towards Valentine’s Day, Send Us Your stories of romance on campus. We want to know how Cupid has made his rounds at KSC. Did you meet your wife at a fraternity party? Rekindle an old flame at your twentieth reunion? Get dumped the day you were expecting a ring? Keep it clean, please; this is a family blog, but we’ll take your love stories and photos until Feb. 8, and we’ll post the best of what we get. E-mail lwebb1@keene.edu.

Help wanted

itsabook1981_p31.jpg

As of January 2008, the members of the Centennial committee on campus, and lots of other folks — faculty, staff, students, alums, retired faculty and staff, community members — have already been working hard on different aspects of the Keene State Centennial. But over the next two years, we’ll need more help, and lots of it. There will be opportunities to share your own stories, of course, but also to staff events, sponsor pieces of the Centennial celebration, sort pictures, offer leadership on committees, lift heavy things…

We’ll post more specific requests for help on this site as we have them, but if you’re so excited to get started you can’t wait another minute, click here to contact Amy Proctor in Advancement.

Welcome

Dr. Giles-Gee and others in the 2007 dramatic reenactment of the founding of Keene Normal School.

Welcome to KSC100, your source for news — and more — concerning the centennial celebration of Keene State College, formerly known as Keene Teachers’ College, formerly known as Keene Normal School. We’ll feature some walks down memory lane, and some opportunities for you to share your own stories and pictures of what Keene, and the school, were like in your day — even if your day is still happening. Come back often for pictures, video interviews, and stories from the past and present. And comment, often; this is your community.
