HW3: Blogs are the new newspaper
David Kline’s “Toward a More Participatory Democracy” was about how blogs are taking over the news world. People aren’t reading newspapers or watching the news on television anymore because they don’t trust it. The essay said that a majority of Americans today tend to believe that news is biased and incompetent (Burstein and Kline 6). One of the examples Kline used was the issue where it was confirmed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and then it was found that they didn’t (Burstein and Kline 7). Americans now turn to blogs to get their information. It is easier for people to pull up polls, statistics, and such on blogs compared to newspapers and television. They can read blogs that specify with their interests, such as which presidential candidate they are supporting. I think that blogging is just an updated way to get political information. It is an upgraded newspaper. It has opened up new opportunities to give and receive information. I was shocked to learn how many people read political blogs. The essay stated that about 33 million people read blogs and out of those 33 million, 11 million read political blogs (Burstein and Kline 6). I think that it is a great use of our technology and a good way to get people’s opinions heard.
