Hey Everyone,

Just a reminder that this Friday October 9th is Fall Break Day.  What does that mean?!?!  No classes for you!  Offices on campus will still be open, so if you need to talk to any person in particular feel free to stop by.

Have a great 3 day weekend!

The Keene State College Community has seen a significant increase in bicycle usage this Fall. While this is an extremely good thing, it creates some issues for us as a community. There have been some announcements through various mediums asking community members to please secure their bicycle to bicycle racks around campus rather than to trees, light poles, handrails, etc…and the Department of Campus Safety would like to reinforce that message. This will benefit us all and we appreciate you keeping our campus both beautiful and safe.

This increase bicycle usage has created some other issues as well. Since 1st year Orientation began on August 26, 2009, the Department of Campus Safety has taken six bicycle theft reports as well as other reports of bicycle vandalism. We would encourage you to leave your bicycles in well lit and high traveled areas, to include the bicycle racks, and most importantly to secure your bicycle with a good locking device.

In addition, all bicycle owners should register their bicycles as it is a City Ordinance to do so in Keene. This can be done by stopping by the Department of Campus Safety or going to the Keene Police Department. As an added bonus, there will be a campus-wide bicycle program on campus today! Feel free to stop by Bike Mania on the Student Center Lawn from 1pm to 3pm. The Department of Campus Safety will be doing bicycle registrations, bicycle sizing and demonstrations. The Green Bikes Program will also be present to do minor bicycle repairs.

In closing, we have attached some bicycle safety tips:

  • Safety 1st - Safety equipment begins with the helmet. Wearing an approved helmet can reduce the risk of a head injury by up to 85% in the event of an accident. In addition, wear brightly colored or reflective clothing so you can be seen during the early morning and evening hours. You should avoid riding your bicycle at night.
  • Keep your bicycle in good shape - Make sure all parts are in good repair, checking your brakes, tires and gears often. Learn the basics so that you can practice routine maintenance. Be sure your bicycle is equipped with reflectors and lights.
  • Follow traffic laws - Bicycles are considered vehicles and cyclists should obey the same traffic laws as motorists. Travel on the right side of the road and avoid riding on sidewalks.
  • Check other routes - Sometimes the main road may not be the safest way to travel by bicycle. Look into alternate routes with less motor vehicle traffic and better road conditions.

Finding the correct fit - The most important factor in bicycling is finding a bicycle that fits you properly. You should be able to stand just over the top bar of the bicycle with your feet flat on the ground

This Sunday October 4th at 7:30pm in the Options Room.

If you are interested in performing contact Colin at cdaly@ksc.mailcruiser.com or stop by his room!
