Jasinski Hits 200: Many Publications in a 31-year Academic Career

Professor Jerry Jasinski (Chemistry) reports that he has just reached a major academic career milestone by publishing 200 papers in refereed, peer-reviewed scientific research journals related to his research involving the x-ray crystallography of biologically and pharmaceutically significant molecules that exhibit insecticidal, antimicrobial, antichorniciral, antopicorniviral and bacteriostatic properties. In addition, many of these molecules are used in therapy of metastatic breast cancer, gastric, colorectal bladder cancer and other solid malignancies as well as in the treatment of enlarged prostrate glands, depression, peptic ulcers, and severe chronic pain to mention a few additional areas of application.

Since the beginning of 2009 he has co-authored the following 12 peer-reviewed scientific research papers – a total of 200 publications in his academic career:

“Synthesis and Crystal Structure of 5-[2-(6 bromonaphthalenyloxymethyl)] -3-
(4-morpholinomethyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2(3H)-thione,” Jasinski, Jerry P., Butcher, Ray J., Mayekar, Anil N., Yathirajan, H. S., Narayana, B., Sarojini, B. K., Journal of Chemical Crystallography, (2009), in press.

“Crystal Structure of a Second Polymorph of Gabapentin Hydrochloride
Hemihydrate with a Three-Center Bifurcated Hydrogen Bond,” Jasinski, Jerry P., Butcher, Ray J., Yathirajan, H. S., Mallesha, L., Mohana, K. N., Narayana, B., Journal of Chemical Crystallography, (2009).

“Dual chlorine-bifurcated acceptor Cl…H–(N,O) hydrogen bonds in 4-[(4-Methylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]benzoic acid dihydrochloride hemihydrates,” Jasinski, Jerry P., Butcher, Ray J., Mallesha, L., Mohana, K. N., Yathirajan, H. S., Narayana, B., Journal of Chemical Crystallography, (2009), in press.

“Intermolecularly Associated Carboxylic Acid Dimers in the Supramolecular Assembly of (R)-1,4-Benzodioxane 2-Carboxylic Acid,” Jasinski, Jerry P., Butcher, Ray J., Mallesha, L., Mohana, K. N., Yathirajan, H. S., Narayana, B., Journal of Chemical Crystallography (2009).

“Crystal Structure of 3-Oxo-4-Aza-5-Alpha-Androstone-17 b-Tert-Butyl Carboxamide with an O…H–(C, N) Acceptor Four-Center Hydrogen Bond,” Jasinski, Jerry P., Butcher, Ray J., Yathirajan, H. S., Narayana, B., Mallesha, L., Mohana, K. N., Journal of Chemical Crystallography (2009).

“Crystal Structure of 2’,3’-Di-O-Acetyl-50-Deoxy-5-Fluorocytidine with N–H…(O,F) Proton Donor Bifurcated and (C,N)–H…O Bifurcated Acceptor Dual Three-Center Hydrogen Bond Configurations,” Jasinski, Jerry P., Butcher, Ray J., Mallesha, L., Mohana, K. N., Yathirajan, H. S., Narayana, B., Journal of Chemical Crystallography (2009).

Early Sprouts – the Book!

From Susan Peery, College and Media Relations: You’ve heard about Early Sprouts, the award-winning curriculum developed by Keene State educators to encourage preschoolers to eat their vegetables. The program, which won a Community Champion award from the U.S. Surgeon General last year, has expanded from its pilot gardens in the Child Development Center (CDC) to preschools and Head Start programs across New Hampshire.

We’ve reported several times on the success of the curriculum, the cuteness of the little children who get excited about veggies, the tastiness of the recipes. Now the creators of the program, Keene State faculty members Karrie Kalich (associate professor of health science), Dottie Bauer (professor of early childhood education), and Deirdre McPartlin (academic program coordinator for the CDC), have pulled all the elements together into a large-format paperback book, Early Sprouts: Cultivating Healthy Food Choices in Young Children, published by Redleaf Press.

The book provides an inspiring and instructive 24-week curriculum filled with sensory activities and cooking experiences geared toward preschoolers. The recipes focus on six easy-to-grow vegetables – tomatoes, green beans, bell peppers, Swiss chard, carrots, and butternut squash – and will appeal to everyone in the family. Many businesses and charitable organizations in New Hampshire and beyond have supported this good work, and congratulations go out to everyone involved.

Geography Dept. Publishes Fifth Atlas for Elementary Students

From Klaus Bayr, Geography (emeritus): The geography department published the Connecticut Atlas for 4th Graders last month.

It is the fifth such atlas Klaus Bayr and his students have produced. The others were on New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

All of these atlases conform to the standards for social studies in each state and include approximately 20 maps of physical features and notes on the state’s history and cultural aspects. Statistical data on population and area of each town and photographs taken by Bayr and Stephanie Straittiff are included.
