FY2011 Initiative Requests

From Jay Kahn and Karen Stanish, Planning Council co-chairs: Principal Administrators have forwarded 56 Departmental Initiative Requests to the Planning Commons for review prior to FY2011. This is fewer than the 73 requests received a year ago. These Initiatives have been forwarded to review committees as stated in the requests. You can track the progress of requests by referencing the Planning Council website: look at the left side of the page under Campus Planning Process. You can also see the Planning Timeline under the same heading. Thank you for your participation in this process and for supporting efforts that advance the College’s Strategic Goals.

Planning Process Workshop

From Jay Kahn and Karen Stanish, Planning Council: The College Planning Council is sponsoring another Planning Process Workshop on Friday, October 23, from 8:30-10 a.m. in the Student Center’s Mountain View Room. If you are planning to submit an initiative through the planning process this year, this is an opportunity for you to receive some last-minute proposal writing or budget assistance prior to submission. Feel free to stop in any time from 8:30 to 10. Bring your laptop or a hard copy of your draft proposal.

Members of the Planning Council, College Information Technology Council, Human Resources Policy Advisory Board, Facilities Planning Advisory Council, and Budget and Resources Council will be present to give you feedback or assistance on items in the proposal form, such as writing a clear narrative, selecting a strategic goal, creating a timeline, and forming an assessment plan. Staff from the Business Office and Human Resources will be present to aid you in filling out the new Planning Proposal Financial Worksheet.

The planning process is a means for communicating your ideas for contributing to the College’s mission, values, and planning goals, and gaining College approval (and, where necessary, funding and staff support) for implementation. To be considered during this year’s planning process, initiatives are due to your director or dean on October 30, 2009, or to your principal administrator on November 6, 2009. Feel free to contact the Planning Council co-chairs, Jay Kahn and Karen Stanish, if you have any questions. You can also view planning process information on the web.

Planning Workshop

From Karen Stanish, (Mathematics): The College Planning Council is sponsoring a pre-proposal workshop on Friday, October 2, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. in the Student Center Mountain View Room. If you are planning to submit an initiative through the planning process this year, this is an opportunity to drop in and receive proposal writing or budget assistance prior to submission and to connect with potential collaborators.

Staff from the Business Office and Human Resources will be present to help you create a realistic budget.

The planning process offers a way to communicate your ideas on how you can contribute to the College’s mission, values, and planning goals and how to gain College approval (and, where necessary, funding and staff support) for implementation. To be considered during this year’s planning process, initiatives must be received by your director or dean on Friday, October 30, 2009, or to your principal administrator on Friday, November 6, 2009.

Feel free to contact the Planning Council co-chairs, Jay Kahn and Karen Stanish, if you have any questions. You can also view planning process information over the web.

Planning Process Update on Operational and Strategic Initiatives

From Jay Kahn, Finance and Planning: The Planning Council has assembled a Planning Commons Status Update on 73 strategic and operational initiatives submitted in late fall. While in many cases, review committees have passed along initiative recommendations, initiatives requiring recommendation from the Budget and Resource Council and the President’s Cabinet still need to be finalized. The original schedule indicated that Cabinet review would be completed by May 14. The uncertainty of the FY2010 budget is making decisions constraining funding available for important initiatives. Committee comments on initiatives are to be forwarded back to requesters in the near future. You can check the status of strategic and operational initiatives by visiting the Planning Council website.
