Dr. Candice Bosse Receives Whiting Foundation Grant

Dr. Candice Bosse, assistant professor of Spanish and Women’s Studies, has received a Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation Grant to facilitate the writing of her second book, Voices of Honduran Women: Here Women Do Not Write. Her first book, Becoming and Consumption: The Contemporary Spanish Novel, was published in 2007.

In July, Bosse will travel to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, to conduct research in the Biblioteca Nacional, a key Central American national library, and to interview Honduran women poets. She will be completing work started in 2006, when she interviewed two Houduran poets, Lety Elvir and Claudia Torres. On this trip, Bosse will interview three more poets, exploring how each “articulates the creation of self” in relation to her role in Honduran society. She plans to use some of this material to create new courses in the Modern Language and Women’s Studies departments at Keene State.

CE’s “Great Decisions” Program Receives Pepsi Grant

From Heather Jasmin, Continuing Education: “The Great Decisions” program, a nationwide forum of the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), has received a Pepsi-KSC Partnership Grant. Focusing on impartial, thought-provoking analyses of issues concerning U.S. policymakers, the “Great Decisions” format combines a lecture on a topic of current global interest followed by an open discussion period. The series is free and open to the public. “Great Decisions” is designed to encourage thoughtful, non-partisan conversation among community members.

The Pepsi Partnership Grant program supports worthwhile campus projects with unrestricted dollars given by the Pepsi Corporation. Projects should improve the College academically or culturally, enhance its reputation, and/or improve students’ quality of life. Twenty-four proposals were submitted from students, faculty, and staff to fund projects and speakers.

The 2009 “Great Decisions” program includes “Afghanistan and Pakistan” (March 12), “Egypt: Key Ally in the Middle East” (March 26), “Global Food Crisis” (April 9), and will conclude with “The U.S. and Rising Powers” (April 23).

Apply for a Spring 2009 KSC Pepsi Partnership Grant

From Barbara Preston, Student Affairs: Student groups and organizations, faculty, staff, and/or departments and administrative offices of the College are invited to apply for the Pepsi Partnership Grant Initiative for Spring 2009. The Pepsi Partnership Grant program supports and promotes worthwhile campus projects with unrestricted dollars given by the Pepsi Corporation to the College. These projects should improve the College academically or culturally, enhance its reputation, and/or improve the quality of life of its students. Funds awarded must be expended this fiscal year (all invoices and payments must be submitted prior to June 1, 2009).

Grant applications may be obtained from the Office of Student Affairs, on the third floor of the Young Student Center or online through Outlook Public Folder, “Pepsi Partnership Grants.” Proposals should be returned to that same office or emailed to bpreston@keene.edu.

When preparing your grant application, please understand that:
• Preference is given to proposals that will result in an outcome that reaches a large and broad spectrum of the student body.
• Consideration is given to projects that are innovative, show promise of bringing new dimensions to the life of the College, and enhance the student experience.
• Serious consideration is given to projects that show potential of promoting academic excellence and improving the quality of student life.
• Funding for clubs and organizations will only be considered if the groups are recognized by or affiliated with the College.
• Proposals to purchase academic materials (i.e., books, equipment, supplies) are not typically funded.
• Proposals for travel are typically not funded since the benefits are usually limited to those people who participate in the trip. Proposals for travel will be considered more favorably if the proposal specifically outlines a direct and substantial benefit to the larger KSC community.
• The strength of a proposal is greatly enhanced when it includes a specific and detailed budget breakdown and specific plans showing larger KSC community benefit.

Please note that grant funding will typically not exceed $2,000 per award, and are given for this academic year only; multi-year projects must be approved on a year-by-year basis. These grants cannot be used to sustain annual operating costs for programs or activities. All Pepsi Partnership Grant recipients will be bound by College policy regarding intellectual property (check “Policies” on KSC Web pages). Pepsi Partnership Grants will not provide funds for honoraria or travel for faculty/staff of the College. The Grants Committee reserves the right to adjust these guidelines to fund unusual, meritorious proposals that may normally fall outside the description.

Traviss Receives COBRE Funding for Biodiesel Fuel Exposure Study

Dr. Nora Traviss (TDS) is one of three New Hampshire scientists who recently received $10.5 million from the National Institutes of Health to extend a Dartmouth-led collaboration for research and training to prevent and cure respiratory illnesses. The five-year award renews support through the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), a federal program established by NIH to augment and strengthen the biomedical research capabilities of small or rural states.

In 2003 Keene State researchers, led by Dr. Melinda Treadwell, received $1 million of a $12 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to identify and characterize the metallic components of pollutants present in occupational and environmental settings across the Northeast and the effects these metals have on exposed individuals.

The renewed funding supports projects that focus on cystic fibrosis, lung inflammation, lung cancer, and the effect of biodiesel fuel on air quality and human health. Dartmouth researchers will collaborate with Dr. Traviss, who will determine if the use of biodiesel fuel compared to petroleum diesel reduces the harmful exposures and health effects associated with emissions of diesel vehicles.

“This project will enhance our active collaboration with colleagues at Dartmouth Medical School, the University of Vermont, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratories in Colorado,” said Dean Treadwell. “Nora’s research, and our collaboration with BBR and the City of Keene, will help to identify the blend of petroleum and biodiesel fuel that will provide the most significant public health and environmental benefit.”
