Continuing Education Offers Online Classes

Know someone looking to start their own business? The Office of Continuing Education offers an array of online courses to meet these needs and many others. Great Decisions Series: The Arctic

From Heather Jasmin, Continuing Education: This fall the Office of Continuing Education is sponsoring “Great Decisions,” a series discussions of global issues. A 45-minute lecture on a topic of global interest is followed by moderated discussion; all lectures are free and open to the public. A nationwide forum of the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), “Great Decisions” is part of the longest-running civic education program in the United States devoted to foreign affairs.

Renate Gebauer (Environmental Studies) will moderate “The Arctic” on Thursday, November 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

CE Call for Faculty Summer Course Proposals

From Dori Almann, Continuing Ed: Continuing Education and Extended Studies invites faculty to submit credit and noncredit course proposals for summer session 2010. The deadline for submitting summer course proposals is Friday, December 11, 2009. 

Summer session courses, offered through Continuing Education and Extended Studies, focus on matriculated, continuing education, and graduate students. Summer classes include ISP courses, upper-level courses in majors, special topics, personal and professional development, and graduate courses. In addition, Continuing Education welcomes faculty suggestions for innovative programming options that might better serve KSC first- and second-year students who typically go home for the summer. Some options being studied include weekend courses, two-, three-, or four-week course formats, and blended/online learning opportunities.

A printable course proposal form is available through the college’s intranet (Outlook/ Public Folders/ All Public Folders/Continuing Education/CE Forms), online, and from the CE office. Please obtain chair/coordinator approval before returning completed course proposals to Steve Kessler, Continuing Education and Summer Session, no later than Friday, December 11, 2009. Questions? We offer non-credit, non-graded classes in both professional and personal development. Our workshops attract community members from seniors in high school to senior citizens. Keene State OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) Signs Alliance with OSHA Region 1

From Dori Almann, Continuing Education: The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Keene State College OSHA Training Institute Education Center (KSC OTIEC) have formed an alliance to provide New England employers and their workers with information about programs and training to help reduce workplace hazards and related human and financial costs.

One of 43 education centers in the country working with OSHA, KSC OTIEC’s training programs help reduce hazards associated with working in general industry and the construction and maritime fields. The alliance provides KSC OTIEC’s instructors and students with access to training resources, supports outreach efforts, and promotes safety and health training. The U.S. Department of Labor and Keene State College have had a cooperative relationship since 1994.

Enrollment for Continuing Education’s Cheshire Academy for Lifelong Learning Spring Program Up

From Dori Almann, Continuing Education: Registration for the spring session of Keene State College’s Cheshire Academy for Lifelong Learning (CALL) is at an all-time high. Founded in the mid-1990s, the program is an educational program for seniors and retired people in the Monadnock region.

The noncredit and nongraded courses are taught by CALL members and other local experts, and participants take an active role in planning courses. CALL members pay a semester registration fee and a membership fee that permits students to use campus facilities throughout the academic year. Topics this spring include the philosophy of Buddhism, the Supreme Court and the constitution, King Lear, conversational French, wicked women of opera, ballroom dance, comparative government, the political economy of Obama’s first 100 days, and medieval life.

CALL is administered through the Division of Continuing Education and Extended Studies (8-2290) located in Elliot Center.

CE’s “Great Decisions” Program Receives Pepsi Grant

From Heather Jasmin, Continuing Education: “The Great Decisions” program, a nationwide forum of the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), has received a Pepsi-KSC Partnership Grant. Focusing on impartial, thought-provoking analyses of issues concerning U.S. policymakers, the “Great Decisions” format combines a lecture on a topic of current global interest followed by an open discussion period. The series is free and open to the public. “Great Decisions” is designed to encourage thoughtful, non-partisan conversation among community members.

The Pepsi Partnership Grant program supports worthwhile campus projects with unrestricted dollars given by the Pepsi Corporation. Projects should improve the College academically or culturally, enhance its reputation, and/or improve students’ quality of life. Twenty-four proposals were submitted from students, faculty, and staff to fund projects and speakers.

The 2009 “Great Decisions” program includes “Afghanistan and Pakistan” (March 12), “Egypt: Key Ally in the Middle East” (March 26), “Global Food Crisis” (April 9), and will conclude with “The U.S. and Rising Powers” (April 23).

OSHA Program Featured in New England Construction Magazine

From Robert Baker, Continuing Education: The OSHA Education Center, a KSC Continuing Education program located in Manchester, N.H., was recently highlighted in the July 28 edition of New England Construction magazine.

The center was noted for its safety and health training programs in an editor’s report entitled “OSHA Training at Keene State Helps Attendees Bolster Their Bottom Line.” The focus of the article was on the center’s Outreach Trainer program, which develops the knowledge and skills of participants to become authorized OSHA Outreach Trainers in the advancement of health and safety for their organization’s workforce.

CALL: Learning in Retirement (or After Work)

From Heather Jasmin, Continuing Education: The Cheshire Academy for Lifelong Learning (CALL) is a program offered by Keene State College for learning in retirement. This program is nonresidential, and is offered on Fridays in the fall and spring. The upcoming Fall semester runs from September 26 through November 14.

Class topics include water birds, drawing, Celtic culture, fitness, the political economy of the 2008 election, and much more. Instructors include local experts as well as current and former KSC staff and faculty: Paul Cullity, Wendy Petschik, Frank Behrens, Joan Roelofs, and Janet Grayson. Registration is $65 per semester. A mandatory $20 yearly membership fee provides participants with discounts on campus merchandise and events, as well as access to the College library.
