KHS students shadow at KSC

From Betsy Street, KSC Project Manager, Monadnock Employment Project:

Nine students from Keene High School, North Campus, came to Keene State on June 10 for a morning of job shadows, hosted by the Monadnock Center for Successful Transitions (MCST).

Students had the opportunity to investigate careers in a non-threatening way by job shadowing Keene State College employees. Betsy Street with the MCST, located in the School of Professional and Graduate Studies, and Ken Susskind, KHS North Campus School Counselor, worked together to plan and organize the day.

This is the third year MCST has coordinated job shadows for high school students, and some KSC hosts have been with the program since the inception. Benefits to the students were always clear; what was unexpected was the satisfaction hosts experience from participating. Deirdre McPartlin from the Child Development Center, “It reminds me how generous the Keene State community can be, and reminds me why I do what I do. The students are so open and interested. They’re just at the beginning of figuring out what they want to do in their lives.”

We’d like to thank the following who hosted students:
From Sodexo: Rich Ducharme, Rich Blanchard, and Rebecca Briggs;
From the Child Development Center: Deirdre McPartlin;
From Physical Plant: Joe Britton, Mike Fuller, and John Conwell;
From the IT Group: Paul Proulx;
From the Mason Library: Linda Madden.
In addition we’d like to thank Advancement, Business Office, Bookstore, Carpentry, Development, Electrical, Environmental Health and Safety, Heating Service, Human Resources, Plumbing Service, and Purchasing, which all volunteered to host a student but were not matched this year.

The MCST, funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has a site at KSC and is housed at Monadnock Developmental Services (MDS). MCST maintains an ever-growing master list of possible job shadows on campus. If you or your department would be interested in participating, please e-mail Betsy Street at bstreet@keene.edu.

Rec Center summer memberships

From Lynne Andrews, Director of Recreation:

Summer Rec Center memberships are still available for all faculty, staff and spouses/same-sex domestic partners (benefits-eligible faculty and staff may use the Harvard Pilgrim Wellness Connection benefit to pay for their membership) and the cost will be $50 from July 1-August 27. The minimum work-out requirement for the Wellness Connection program remains the same during the summer (8 workouts per month) and members are encouraged to promptly complete their workout log sheet each month to ensure that they fulfill this requirement. Membership sign-ups can be done at the front desk of the Recreation Center during our facility hours, Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday, 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

IT Tech Tip of the Week: Netbooks

From the IT Group:

Netbooks, the lighter, smaller version of laptop computers, are being purchased by departments across campus because of their compact size and inexpensive price tag. Netbook users typically rely on online applications and services which do not require powerful computing power. They are perfect for travel if your needs are limited to reading email and surfing the web; you don’t need large storage capacity or fast processing; and you can live without high resolution graphics and a large screen. While they fit this need for basic computing, netbooks are not currently a supported technology by the IT Group. HelpDesk staff won’t be able to help you operate, load applications and/or troubleshoot them if something goes wrong. However, if they are purchased with KSC funds, you are still required to comply with all KSC policies regarding equipment purchase and disposal, data security and privacy.

As with all computers accessing the KSC network, netbooks must meet the standard IT Group security requirements with the installation of McAfee anti-virus software, windows updates and patches installed.

If you have any questions regarding this or any other technology issue, please feel free to contact the HelpDesk at 358-2532, e-mail helpdesk@keene.edu or stop by our office on the 2nd floor of Elliot Hall.
