Women’s basketball kudos

womens-40From Nancy Balla, Residence Life:

Nancy Balla ’73, of Residential Life, would like to thank the Athletic department for the recent recognition of the history of the Women’s Basketball program at KSC. Nancy was a member of the first intercollegiate team in  ’69-’70, forty years ago! It was a joy and an honor to take part in the celebration and have the chance to see new and old friends again at Spalding Gym. A great time was had by all.

Indeed, and thanks for sharing, Nancy! Stuart Kaufman of Sports Information has a really nice story on the event on the keene.edu page.

Successful engineering

parking-lotFrom Mary Jensen, Sustainability Programs:

This is a photo of the parking lot adjacent to the new Alumni Building. Due to City regulations, we’ve installed permeable pavement. Permeable pavement is a coarser asphalt that allows the water to filter through instead of running off, which is what happens with most pavement. Here’s a link for more info.
We’ve only had it in since October, so we don’t have a full years worth of experience and we will have to be careful because it requires a different, more careful maintenance. That said, check out the picture forwarded to Bud Winsor by the engineering firm that designed it showing the permeable next to the traditional, existing parking lot behind the historical society.

Bud adds:

It’s such a win/win on many levels: stormwater drainage control, salt/chemical use reduction for ice control, slip trip and fall liability, etc., etc. ….

Soar Athletic Newsletter now available

From John Napolitano, Sports Information:

The winter edition of SOAR is available online.

Special thanks to Charlie Beach for putting together the 40th Anniversary of Women’s Basketball Recap Video!

Seymour and MVP Partners in Prevention

Forrest Seymour accepted the 2010 Partners in Prevention Award from the Monadnock Center for Violence Prevention at MCVP’s annual meeting on January 20.

When contacted, Forrest wanted to be sure we acknowledged that the work being honored is conducted primarily by students; three KSC Mentors in Violence Prevention peer educators joined him at the ceremony. “I am merely the ‘coordinator.’”

Congratulations, then, to MVP. And to their coordinator.

Owlets recognized

peewee-owls

From Stuart Kaufman, Sports Information:

There were big Owls and small Owls at Spaulding Gym on Saturday. Keene State College basketball players recognized members of the Pee-Wee Owl team at halftime of the women’s game against the University of Southern Maine.

The Pee-Wee Owls team, comprising boys and girls from the Monadnock region, grades K-2, recently completed four Sunday morning practices where they were introduced to the sport.

“I love their energy and enthusiasm,” said KSC women’s basketball coach and program director Keith Boucher. “This is the first time a lot of them have participated in an organized activity as far as sport goes.”

The young Owls are taught skills and then get to play games with members of the KSC men’s and women’s teams.  “We lower the baskets so they can play the game and get a sense of accomplishment,” Boucher said. “The looks on the faces when they make a basket is priceless.”

Tech Tip of the Week: PowerPoint 2007

From the IT Group:

Do you use PowerPoint frequently and find it frustrating to have to change your font style or other formatting preferences every time you create a make a new slide? If you use Office 2007, you can create a template exactly the way you like and reuse it for all future presentations. Once you have opened PowerPoint:

  • Click on the View Tab -> Slide Master
  • In the Edit Theme section, change your font to the desired style and size
  • Close Master View (far right side)
  • Under the Office Button -> Save As -> change the TYPE to PowerPoint 97-2003 template and change the name to Blank Presentation

To retrieve your Blank Presentation template, click on the Office Button -> New -> My Templates - > select Blank Presentation.

If you apply more than one slide design in your presentation, you will need to make the same formatting changes in each of those Master Slides.

Give it a try! If you have any questions regarding this or any other technology issues, please feel free to contact the HelpDesk at 358-2532, e-mail helpdesk@keene.edu or stop by our office on the 2nd floor of Elliot Hall.

E-Mail Account Maintenance.

This is an actual message many on campus received last fall. Is this e-mail Phishing or is it real? This e-mail is Phishing.

You can tell because Keene State College and the IT Group would never ask you to verify any account information through e-mail or any other electronic source. We already have that information.

Also, this message does not use the standard template you always see from the IT Group when we communicate to campus. Our template always:

  • addresses the GAL, not individuals and it always comes from the IT Group HelpDesk.
  • identifies ourselves as the IT Group at the beginning of the message.
  • tells you the reason behind our communication (routine maintenance, infrastructure upgrade, etc.).
  • provides our contact information (including phone number, e-mail address, and building location), in case you have any questions or concerns.

However, most importantly, legitimate institutions, including the IT Group, will not ask for personal information through e-mail. There are never any exceptions to this.

We hope this information will help you better understand Phishing when you receive a suspicious email. However, whenever you are in doubt, do not hesitate to contact the HelpDesk at358-2532, email helpdesk@keene.edu, or stop by our office on the second floor of Elliot Hall. We will be glad to help.
