During spring break, the staff of Student Financial Services issued a Centennial Challenge to the departments housed in Elliot Center: Celebrate KSC’s centennial with a donation of 100 cans of food to the Community Kitchen.
The Advancement, Elliot Center, and Information Technology departments joined the friendly competition ¬with great spirit: On the last day, with 20 minutes to the deadline, an IT staffer rushed out to purchase cans to push the department’s tally to the top. When the final count was made, however, SFS staffers held the lead with 209 donated cans. The participants piled 451 cans into the pick-up truck that delivered the food to the Community Kitchen.

From Mary Jensen, Recycling and Sustainability: This year, Keene State is participating in Earth Hour 2009, an international event that will take place between 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. For one hour this coming Saturday, turn out your lights and turn off all energy-using objects (more information here).

As part of the world’s first global election between Earth and global warming, 2,140 cities, towns, and municipalities in 82 countries have committed to VOTE EARTH for Earth Hour 2009. Let’s get involved and join this great effort. Do it in the dark and see what a difference you can make! (For inspiration, watch this.)

From Susan Peery, College and Media Relations: You’ve heard about Early Sprouts, the award-winning curriculum developed by Keene State educators to encourage preschoolers to eat their vegetables. The program, which won a Community Champion award from the U.S. Surgeon General last year, has expanded from its pilot gardens in the Child Development Center (CDC) to preschools and Head Start programs across New Hampshire.
We’ve reported several times on the success of the curriculum, the cuteness of the little children who get excited about veggies, the tastiness of the recipes. Now the creators of the program, Keene State faculty members Karrie Kalich (associate professor of health science), Dottie Bauer (professor of early childhood education), and Deirdre McPartlin (academic program coordinator for the CDC), have pulled all the elements together into a large-format paperback book, Early Sprouts: Cultivating Healthy Food Choices in Young Children, published by Redleaf Press.
The book provides an inspiring and instructive 24-week curriculum filled with sensory activities and cooking experiences geared toward preschoolers. The recipes focus on six easy-to-grow vegetables – tomatoes, green beans, bell peppers, Swiss chard, carrots, and butternut squash – and will appeal to everyone in the family. Many businesses and charitable organizations in New Hampshire and beyond have supported this good work, and congratulations go out to everyone involved.

From Connie Lester, Redfern: Step back in time to the famous beat of America’s March King in An Evening of John Philip Sousa on Tuesday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Theatre of the Redfern. Dr. Keith Brion, guest conductor of the KSC Concert Band, will recreate a concert by one of the most famous and popular musical personalities of the 20th century in honor of Keene State’s Centennial Celebration. Sousa visited Keene with his band on six occasions between 1897 and 1912, performing at either the city’s Opera House or City Hall.
Brion, who portrays this American phenomenon, is considered the single greatest authority on Sousa and will prepare an historically accurate recreation of a Sousa Band concert. He will lead the KSC Concert Band in an evening of classical, dance, and popular music, exactly as it would have been heard 100 years ago. “Sousa’s concerts were rarely all-Sousa,” explained Brion, “but rather a mixture of light classics, novelties, and brilliant instrumental and vocal solos, with Sousa marches played as rapid-fire encores.”
Featured performers will be KSC music performance major Heather O’Connor ’09 (soprano) and music faculty members James Boccia (trumpet) and Dr. Craig Sylvern (saxophone).
Brion will be in week-long residence at the college, speaking to classes on music history, conducting, and the theatre craft involved in depicting the on-stage persona. He will also rehearse with the Concert Band to prepare for the April 7 performance.
Please call the box office (8-2168) for tickets.
