AVEO Staff
David Moon, Executive Director
David founded AVEO in 2003, building on his 25 years of experience in both classroom and non-formal environmental education. Prior to his work with AVEO, he spent nine years as Education Director at Stonewall Farm in Keene, NH. He has taught Tropical Forest Ecology at Franklin Pierce College since 2000, taking students to the cloud forests, rain forests, and dry forests of Costa Rica. David has served on the boards of the New England Environmental Education Alliance and New Hampshire Environmental Educators, and on the Education Committee of the Appalachian Mountain Club. He has an M.S.T. from Antioch University New England and a B.S. in Biology from Haverford College in Haverford, PA.
When not plotting new ways to keep track of nature in the Ashuelot Valley, David can be found with his children Rory and Lindsay, kayaking the rapids of central New England, or fussing with his bees, chickens, and maple sugaring operations at home in Westmoreland, NH.
Brett Amy Thelen, Science Director
Brett comes to AVEO with a M.S. in Environmental Studies: Conservation Biology from Antioch University New England in Keene, New Hampshire. Her graduate research represented the merging of conservation biology and environmental education, and she remains focused on cultivating meaningful environmental change through the expansion of volunteer involvement in ecological research initiatives. Prior to her graduate work, Brett volunteered with an AmeriCorps program focused on land conservation, water conservation and environmental education on Cape Cod, and served as the lead on several environmental education and natural resource management projects for Cape Cod National Seashore. She has also worked as a teacher and interpretive naturalist in western Massachusetts. Brett received her B.A. in Literary & Cultural Studies and German from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA.
When she’s not citizen science-ing, Brett can be found wandering through the woods, curling up with a good book, or cooking locally-grown feasts.
