My research interests currently focus in three primary areas, each of which fully involves students in a collaborative framework. The first encompasses research on field pedagogy. With colleagues at Plymouth State University and the University of Wolverhampton, UK we are developing an assessment tool to measure the efficacy of field work in geography and environmental studies. This emanates from a number of field courses undertaken in New England, Ecuador, Spain and the Desert Southwest USA.
The second research focus revolves around investigations of population aging and the re-migration of older citizens from urban areas to the countryside. Initial studies are comparing patterns in New England and Austria and is in cooperation with a colleague at the University of Salzburg, Austria.
A occasional area of study is based on historical and paleoenvironmental analysis of lake bed sediments to answer the question “Where is the top of Mount Monadnock?” This work emanated from a rather casual conversation by a colleague from the University of Wolverhampton, UK while on a field trip to the mountain. Since the site was burned in the early 1800s allegedly to rid the area of wolves subsequent erosion of the soils is, we believe, deposited in nearby lakes. Our goal as part of an annual field course is to sample these lakebed sediments and relate them to the history of regional land use systems.
Lastly, I am the Editor of Studies in New England Geography, an Occasional Paper Series published by the Department of Geography, Keene State College. Twenty-two have been published to date.
